Return to Zombie Island shits all over it and instead becomes just another longer-than-average, run-of-the-mill episode of What's New Scooby-Doo. All of this has a backdrop of gritty realism and a tense, visceral atmosphere unlike anything that Scooby-Doo had ever done before and has never quite done properly since Witch's Ghost. The zombies are their victims trapped on Earth, and are trying to warn the gang away from the island - they're actually good guys. Turns out, the zombies are very real, and the three antagonists are actually cat people who drain the lives of those who venture onto the island to preserve their immortality. So they get back together and venture out for one more mystery. Then they hear about Moonscar Island, which is supposedly REALLY haunted. It even starts with a montage of the gang trying to find real monsters only to keep finding criminals and then eventually getting fed up and disbanding. The whole point of the original was to lampoon the series' heritage. No effort has been put into this film whatsoever. And, most importantly, the monsters were REAL.Ĭompare the original zombies.png) to the ones in the sequel. It was dark, it was gritty, there was very little humour in it. The original was so special and unique because it was unlike anything Scooby-Doo had ever done before. This was like watching a Saturday morning cartoon, complete with pastel colours, bold line art, goofy sound effects and ill-timed comedy The art style in the original was hand-drawn, hyper-detailed, beautifully animated. It shit all over everything that was special about the original. Well, it got released, and I am dumbfounded. As a massive fan of the original Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, you can imagine how excited I was to find out that a sequel was in the works.
